19th Century Elephant Hair and 18ct Gold Bangle

£320.00

This is such a special piece; I have had elephant hair rings a few times, but it’s hard finding them in great condition, and in a wearable style for today. This bangle is so contemporary looking, the wire-like hair lends itself to this type of overlapping design, but it’s the lover’s knot that knocked my socks off. Such an iconic Victorian emblem, I love to see it here in such an exotic setting. The bangle is finished simply with 18ct yellow gold ‘crimps’, very easy to wear.

Elephant hair jewellery was popular in the late 19th century and early 20th, it was bought as souvenirs during the British Raj. Having been out on safari/hunting trips, the tourists would have a piece of jewellery made from a tail hair of their trusty mount. The fact that this has French gold marks is interesting to me, maybe a strand of hair was taken back to Paris for one’s favourite jeweller to custom make a bangle from.

The colonists did not 'invent' jewellery made from elephant hair, far from it. Early African tribesmen believed elephants were the only connection between the heavens and the earth, and they would use elephant hair in their jewellery to ward off bad luck, illness, and to bring health and happiness.
