Antique Rose Cut Diamond Hoop Earrings
I don’t know where to start. The description doesn’t even hint to the fabulous-ness of these earrings, but I couldn’t really do a forty word heading. I have never seen hoops like this. I’ve seen diamonds set in a similar way in earlier Southern European jewellery, but never this wild combination of substantial hoops, the stylised floral setting of the rudimentary rose cuts, and in hoop form! What a dream!
They won’t be for everyone. If you want perfect neat jewels, if you want to know the grading and carat of every stone in your jewels, look away now. These are not for you. All I know for absolute sure, is hat they are mounted in 14ct gold and silver. They have to been at least early to mid 19th century, possibly earlier, and my best guess of origin would be Southern Europe. Probably no Portuguese as they liked to use a higher carat of gold usually. Look I’ve asked several experts and we’re all scratching our heads!
They are chunky, they are sparkly, I LOVE the floral motif of the settings, they are just out of this world in my opinion, and above all, they are wearable, thanks to the new posts that have been put on (the originals would have been some tricky wires, not so great for the modern gal). You can bet your bottom dollar you won’t bump into anyone wearing anything remotely similar!
They are surprisingly comfortable to wear (yes, I have road tested them, you’re welcome!) despite the weight. You are aware they are on, but not in a bad way.
Era
Circa 1830/1850
Material
14ct gold (XRF tested), silver and diamond
Measurements
Diameter 33mm, width 8mm
Weight
21.2 grams
Condition
Very good antique condition. Please note these are quite early earrings, the diamonds are rose/table cut and some have little cracks/chips, which might have always been there. Perfect diamonds were not a ‘thing’ when these were made!
