1950s Tri-Colour 14ct Gold Butterfly
The very first hints of spring are in the air, and what could be more symbolic of this than a beautiful butterfly?! Ok, well maybe a daffodil or lamb or something but I don’t have a brooch like that.
This super chic tri-colour gold brooch was made by M.C. Mossalone, an American jeweller who supplied upmarket department stores (such as Barneys) back in the 1950s and 60s. This pin is joyful. It’s bold and substantial while retaining a delicacy, as you would expect with a butterfly, and I love how the wings undulate, they aren’t simply flat. The pierced out sections lighten it up, mimicking natural markings on a real butterfly. The wings are hinged, so you can make them ‘flap’, an endearing detail that has been added for pure fun.
This butterfly is the most stylish brooch/pin, but it also has potential to be converted into the most amazing pendant.
