19th Century Elephant Hair Ring
This super unusual ring is made from a strand of elephant tail hair wrapped in gold. The ring overlaps itself so it is slight adjustable, so clever, not to mention handy as it can be worn on different fingers.
Elephant hair jewellery was popular in the late 19th century and early 20th, it was bought as souvenirs during the British Raj. Having been out on safari/hunting trips, the tourists would have a piece of jewellery made from a tail hair of their trusty mount.
The British colonists did not 'invent' jewellery made from elephant hair, far from it. Early African tribesmen believed elephants were the only connection between the heavens and the earth, and they would use elephant hair in their jewellery to ward off bad luck, illness, and to bring health and happiness.
This is a beautiful, super interesting ring, lets hope all that good juju stayed inside it!
